Completed Crib Quilt

Well, it didn’t take long but its done!  YAY.  I spent most of last weekend sandwiching the quilt together.  Since it’s a smaller quilt it didn’t take as long as I thought it would and with the right tools it was a piece of cake.

Quilting in progress

Sandwiching is the process of sewing the top, the soft batting in the middle and the backing all together at once.  Depending on the batting, it can get quite thick so I purchased a recommended walking foot for this project as it really does what the name implies. I was able to purchase one on Ebay from a local seller and it was worth every penny!

My favorite part…the quilt backing

I got some great advice from the women at a local quilt shop called The Quilted Fox

.  They were very helpful when selecting the right batting and offering different ways in which to stitch the whole thing together.

In addition to the local advice I found many online resources to help me complete the project but the most helpful was this binding tutorial. I think it could be useful on many projects and not just quilting.

All in all, I’m really happy with the results.  As with any project that’s craft related or not, it comes down to doing a little research, following directions, making sure you have the right tools and taking your time.

I’m sure the quilt will come in handy this winter during late night feedings when its time to snuggle up!

For those of you that follow Tara Frey’s blog, author of Blogging For Bliss you may have already seen this but if not she posted a fun knitted accessory she’s calling the Knitlace©.  What a great idea!  If you’re not an avid knitter but love the look she has several available on her etsy site

30 down 10 to go!

Here’s an interesting vantage point. Most of the time I can’t see my feet.

Wow…Fall is here already?  Summer came and went in a flash.  So with only 10 weeks left to go I’m trying not to stress out over baby preparation.  That’s why I’ve dedicated the whole month of October to turn our office into a nursery for Jr.

Furniture has been ordered and delivered, paint samples have been selected and the crib quilt is well on its way to being completed. I can see how it’s going to look in my head and with the help of my idea book I know it will come together in no time.

We don’t have ton of storage space but what we do have is being underutilized.  I hope to have some before and after pics to show at the end of this month.

Until then things maybe quiet around here but I will have a couple of small projects to share once they get to their intended owners.

Bye for now!

WIP: Crib quilt

Back in July I did some research on modern quilting.  There are so many great blogs and books dedicated to this specific craft that it was a little overwhelming so I decided to start out with a simple crib quilt using charm squares. The pattern is appropriately named Due Date by Bean Counter Quilts.

I have worked with charm squares in the past and the precut 5 inch squares really do save some time in the cutting process. I went with the Arcadia fabric line because I loved the color combinations and the modern style of the fabric.  I also like the fact that it doesn’t scream baby quilt!

Most of last Sunday was spent piecing the quilt top together.  I probably spend way too much time working on it, but I wanted to get it right.  All that’s left to do is sew the border and then assembling the batting/backing and lastly attached the binding.  There’s where I don’t have a clue! I’m hoping my local library has all kinds of quilting resources so I can figure out the basics.

If you’re a quilter and have any advice or favorite reference books I’d love to hear from you.

Amigurumi Frog II

Amigurumi is what first got me interested in crochet a couple of years ago but its been ages since I made a crocheted little critter.  Since I had plenty of time to kill on the drive to and from Chicago, I was able to work on this little guy.

It’s the perfect project for a road trip because it requires so few supplies.  The most time consuming aspect is sewing all the parts together and even that doesn’t take long.

If you’re interested in learning more about amigurumi the creator of this pattern has a blog and shares some free patterns. I found that starting with the simple snail project was a fun way to get introduced to this style of crochet.

We had such a great time in Chicago last weekend that it flew by! We were so busy enjoying our time in the city together that I didn’t really stop to take a lot of pics.

The weather was perfect all weekend long. We took our time driving up on Friday and stopped at Ikea before heading to the Merchandise Mart for some interior design inspiration.

Friday night we hopped on the red line and headed for Shuba’s

The Celestine Prophecy movies

to see singer/songwriter & author Joe Pernice.  He’s currently on tour to promote his new book.  He started out by reading some hilarious excerpts from the book then played some cover songs.  The tour only stopped in a handful of cities so glad we were able to see him.

Saturday morning we made our way to the Renegade Craft Fair. There was so much to see but we were able to visit with Beth for a little while.  Her booth was hoppin’ so we didn’t stay long.  Here are a few finds we picked up along the way.

Onesies for the kiddo
(I can’t remember who made the robot but the cute monster is by Harrilu)

Hand-dyed cashmere/wool blend yarn by Kitchen Sink Dyeworks.
It’s just wait to be turned into a baby sweater.

Saturday night we ventured to the Hideout for the Bloodshot Records anniversary party.  There’s where we met up with the adorably dress HMW!  We had fun hanging out and listening to Alejandro Escovedo who been around the alt country scene for a long time & the Waco Brothers, a fun alt-country/rocka-billy group from Chicago.

That’s me, DHB, and HMW taken from her iphone

All in all, a fantastic weekend getaway!

DIY Scratch Off Cards

Did anyone see this tutorial posted on ohdeedoh today?  What a fantastic idea!  Not sure how I would use it but it could be a fun way to do a gift exchange or school raffle.

Road Trip!

The hubby and I are head to Chicago this weekend.  We haven’t really been anywhere all summer execpt for a trip to the lake and with baby Buscher’s impending arrival it will be a while before we can plan another weekend get-away.

There are all kinds of events going on this weekend including the Renegade Craft Fair.  My friend & jewelry designer, Elizabeth Williams, will have a booth (No. 57) so if you’re in-town be sure to stop by or you can check out her Etsy store.  Artist and plush toy maker Shawnimals will be there as well as one of my favorite silkscreen clothing designers Harrilu.  There are over 300 booths this year!

I hope to do some crafting of my own on the drive up there.  As always.  I’m working on another crocheted frog like the one I made last year only this one will be yellow.  I just hope the weather will as nice as weather.com is predicting.  Fingers crossed.  Two-da-loo for now!

Mustache Mania

For a while now it seems that the mustache is back in style.  I’ve seen events, novelty items (here & here) and even coworkers sporting “the stache!”

So, when I saw this mug at my local UO store a few weeks ago it made me chuckle. Since I work with a group of IT guys I though it would be even funnier that I, the only female, have a mustache mug.  On second thought, I have seen a handful of women sporting their own style of “stache” but lets not get into that.

Is it quite possibly one of the silliest purchase I ever made but it made me laugh.  Then again I’m the type of person who laughs at fart jokes so maybe this mug was made for me!

Baby names

Since finding out a few weeks ago that we’re having a boy many people have been asking us about baby names and I’m reminded of a funny post over at Failblog.org.  It’s a site that makes me laugh on a daily basis.  Anyway, it is important to remember that although a name is just a name it stays with you forever!  Case in point.  Poor kid!
