Your teenage daughter likely feels that she has become too old for a lot of things – like showing affection for you in public, hanging out with the family, or playing with childhood toys she once loved. There is one thing that both of you can agree that she has outgrown with – the design of her bedroom.
Most of the time, teen girls are stuck with the style and design of their bedrooms from when they were little girls with stuffed toys strewn on the bed and dolls displayed on the cabinets. There are several ways to update the design of the teenage girl’s bedroom. One sure way to know which one is to ask for her opinion. However, one great suggestion that she may appreciate is bringing a garden theme into her bedroom. A garden theme is feminine yet at the same time young and fresh.
You may also bring in a garden or country cottage motif by adding flowers and floral accents. However, it is important not to overdue the amount of flowers or floral pattern in the bedroom otherwise it will result to an overbearing or more mature design. You must additionally consider personal preference.
Certain types of flowers are more closely associated with a cottage or garden theme than others. Hibiscus will remind you more of a tropical feel rather than a cottage on. You can use common varieties of flowers like roses, carnations, hydrangea, and orchids, just to name a few possibilities. Go for those that are understated in color but that have a full look with this kind of design.
When you say garden or cottage theme when referring to color, you immediately think of subtle hues like pale blue, pale pink and mint green. Light, pale colors are great for a garden theme bedroom. Since a garden style or cottage theme uses a lot of patterns, bright bold colors will only make the patterns look chaotic and busy. With a light, pale color backdrop, these patterns appear more feminine and subtle.
If you do not have the patience for painting an entire room or using different painting techniques to bring out texture on your wall then you can always use wallpaper. You might also select wallpaper for the cottage theme. Floral and striped patterned wallpapers are the most common.
When it comes to linen, whether for the bed, curtain or chair, opt for light fabrics. Heavy fabrics like wool are not advisable. However, you may use these types of fabrics on minimal items like a throw.
The bed for this theme is a good way to bring in the garden or cottage theme in a big way. Go for a wrought iron framed bed because a heavy framed bed or one with a bigger headboard will take away from your theme. A four-poster bed is also a great idea for the space.
Bringing in accessories will definitely tie in all your design elements together. To veer away from a very feminine bedroom, use large wall decor with a garden theme or silver metal wall art. Both will bring you texture while staying within the theme. Leaves metal wall hangings may be made more practical by putting on hooks that will serve as a coat rack.
There are many creative ways to re-decorate and update a teen girl’s bedroom. A garden or cottage theme bedroom will give her a sense of being more grown up without looking too dowdy.
