April 2009

I drew this little pear a while ago not knowing what I would do with it.  I’m always making lists for things so rather than buying more blank note pads I whipped up my own.  Since sharing is fun I created a pdf so you could download and print your own. Enjoy!

Yesterday I attended a baby shower for my good friend Elizabeth.  Rob did an excellent job hosting the shin-dig and the food was delicious! It was great to see some old faces and catch-up.  After we stuffed our faces it was onto the shower game.  At first, I was unsure what that meant as I know of goofy games like this.  Gross!  Luckily, it was fun trivia of guess the T.V. mom’s and celebrity babies.  Although my team didn’t win I learned that I clearly need to read US Weekly more often.

The happy Mom-to-be

For my shower gift I decided to go with something handmade.  My first ever knitted sweater.  It started out well until I realized I was working on the wrong size circular needles, opps!  So, I ripped it all out and started over.  Surprisingly this all works up as one piece so no sewing needed.  To create the arms it required working in rounds and that’s when I headed to my LYS (local yarn store) for advice.  With Debbie’s help I had it all figured out.  It’s a lot easier that it looks.  All in all, it turned out really well and most importantly the mom-to-be was delighted!

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year and a half since we last saw my brother.  How time flies!  It was great to spend some time together and even though it rained most the weekend my husband and brother were able to play a lot of golf on Saturday.  By a lot of golf I mean 27 holes and that, my friends, is a lot of golf!

Anyway, while the guys were out for a few hours I was able to spend some time on a project that is long overdue.  I bought some fabric during my last visit to Chicago at Ikea with the intention of making some simple envelope style pillow covers and it’s been sitting in my stash ever since.

I realize this isn’t the most challenging project but it was a project I was finally able to check off my list and that feels good!

Have you been able to check anything off your to-do list lately?

I’ve been doing some research on the latest cell phones and although I do think that the iPhone

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior the movie The Langoliers rip
For Hire dvd

is an outstanding piece of technology I really don’t feel as thought I need one.  I like my simple clam shell and even though it has a camera and access to the internet I rarely use it.

My current phone is only two years old but in the cell phone world that’s the equivalent of our AARP card showing up in the mail.  The manufacturer doesn’t even make the model anymore.  So, when seeing all the latest features on today’s phones it got me thinking about my very first cell phone and oh, how times have change.

The Motorola 2900 bag phone

That’s right!  I had the “bag phone.”  I think I was in high school at the time and working at a grocery store.  Sometimes I would have to work late so my Dad thought it would be a good idea to have a cell phone, you know in case of emergencies.  It used to be my Dad’s but even he had upgraded to a console model.  Pretty sweet, right?  It was huge by today’s standards and pretty heavy.   There was no camera or GPS and you definitely couldn’t clip this to any belt.

Do you remember your first cell phone and what do you like about your current phone?

Lodge Chic

Has anyone seen the latest line of fabrics by Joel Dewberry?  The line is name Deer Valley and its described as lodge chic.  I do like the color combinations and I could see them being used for some cozy pillows or even a uniqued quilted throw but the fabric is a little bold for apparel.  Maybe its just me.

It won’t be available till June but you can pre-order it at Fat Quarters Shop.

All in all, I had a wonderful birthday.  Thanks to all of you that sent birthday wishes via Facebook, email and US mail.  Every message made me smile! My hubby did very well this year.  I received this stunning orchid necklace and a memorable dinner at Niche.  I highly recommend it.  Over the weekend I was able to spend some time with my Mom.  I haven’t seen her since our trip to England in January so quality time was well overdue.

Thanks to those, four, of you that shared your birthday stories it’s just a shame there weren’t more.  So, the names went into a hat and the winner is Mel!  Congrats Mel!  I’ll be contacting you via email for your snail mail info.

I hope to have more crafting projects to share soon and perhaps some new recipes!

This week is my birthday week and to celebrate I’m having a giveaway!  I haven’t done a giveaway in a while and it’s long overdue.  Last weekend I made another Buttercup purse with plans to make more. I can’t seem to stop.  The size and style is perfect and the best part is I can finish one in a couple of hours.

This red canvas and cherry dot fabric purse is up for grabs!

Lately, my birthday’s have been pretty low-key.  I had a big blowout for my 30th a few years ago and now its all down hill from here!  Only kidding, really, age doesn’t seem to bother me too much yet.  Mostly, I’m looking forward to spending some quality time with family and friends.  It does seem to be turning into a week-long affair but there’s nothing wrong with that right?

To enter this giveaway: Please post a comment describing your ideal birthday or your favorite birthday memory by Midnight, Sunday April 12th.  I’ll announce the winner on Monday, April 12th.  Good luck!

In the Garden

I planted some bleeding hearts last year but they were almost done blooming by the time I got them in the ground. They really are quite pretty and grow really well in the shade.  Now that I have seen them in bloom I understand how they got their name. Although they don’t actually bleed! It’s just too bad they don’t bloom like this all season long.

My only concern with planting more hostas is the possibility of gophers or rabbits eating the entire stash like last year!  Which looked something like this…

Don’t Look Now rip

Those are indeed full hosta leaves picked and wedged under the planter box which was clearly where the vermin took up residency last summer.  Let’s just hope it was an internship and that they’ve moved on to greener pastures this year.

If anyone has any good prevention methods other than shooting or poisoning the little bastards I’m all ears!

So, for the past few months I’ve participated in the company bowling league.  I do admit that I enjoy bowling.  It’s an excuse to drink beer and hang out with work buddies.  I’m usually thoroughly entertained by the people that take it so seriously my teammates included! Now that the season is over awards were given out.  Low and behold, this one had my name on it!

As soon I saw this I burst out laughing.  Everything about this is funny to me!  First, the woman with the mullet, yes, she has a mullet.  She’s also wearing a skirt and although she has a bowling ball in her hand she looks ready for the 800 meter dash. She stands atop a column decorated with metallic stars and waves that look like flames!  Sweet.  Oh ya, and there is an eagle atop a bowling ball.  Not sure what that has to do with anything but get out the devil horns cause this thing ROCKS!!!
