Last summer, the Bibliophilacs Book Club I belong to selected Coraline as part of our favorite children’s book series. I had never read it but really enjoy the book. It’s not your average kids book and at times it’s rather dark and has some creepy characters.

Bibliophilacs: Elizabeth, Andy, Everett and Rob with buttons for eyes!
So, when I learned via the How blog that everything in the film was handmade I knew I had to see it asap. Tuesday night the book club headed to the theater with plenty of snacks in hand. Once we’d viewed the movie it was very clear that it had two main aspects. Those aspects were how it was made and the storyline.
First, the artistry that when into this film was simply mind-blowing and the attention to detail was stunning! The character’s really came to life. I would see it again just for that aspect alone. The storyline however was a little off. They included a character that wasn’t in the book and who, unfortunately, was pretty irrelevant and they changed the ending of the film too which disappointed a few of us. I won’t go into great detail for those that haven’t seen it yet but I will mention that picking Terry Hatcher for the voice of the mother role was gen-i-us!
All in all, it’s a wonderful and inspiring adaptation. Well worth the ticket price and will find a place on my media shelf as soon as it comes out on DVD.
